Eva canceled the harvest party.

Based on her mood over the last few days, I’d been expecting it anyway – what I didn’t expect was for the somber energy to linger. In the short time I’d known her, one thing I knew for certain about Evangeline James was that when she was ready to talk about something, she would.

So I didn’t push it.

But still… I was wondering what the hell was going on with her.

This part of the process – the harvesting, the crushing, the engineering of fermentation… this was all the stuff she’d been the most excited about. She was present and alert for it, sure, and she was as hands on as she could be while still plagued by her injury. Something was off though.

Like her heart wasn’t in it anymore, and she was just going through the motions.

I had no idea what had changed though.

It couldn’t be Leon’s presence – he was active and engaged, enjoying stepping into something of a volunteer role. With Eva somewhat out of commission, he’d actually been pretty damned valuable with getting this done. Something Eva had definitely noticed and appreciated. I would think having his stamp of approval would be energizing for her.

But… nope.

She’d spent the last couple of days, growing more and more vacant.

“I recognize that look,” Leon chuckled, approaching the front desk of the lodge. It was a quiet morning, and Regina had roped me into keeping an eye on things for her while she ran a few errands.

My eyebrows went up, waiting for further explanation as he tossed his bag onto the counter.

“Our mutual friend is giving your brain a good workout, right?” he correctly guessed, wearing a knowing smirk. “Angie has put that same look on my face more times than I can count – I know what it looks like cause she used to tell me to ‘go stand in the mirror so you can see just how stupid your dumb ass is looking, with your dumb ass’. Verbatim.”

“Damn,” I laughed. “So you’re saying I’m standing up here looking stupid?”

“I’m saying that’s what she’d say if she saw you. I’m empathizing with you, brother. That’s a mind-blowing woman you’re dealing with. All usages of the phrase apply.”

I shrugged. “I can’t really argue with that, huh?”

“Not even a little.”

“You’re checking out?” I asked him, gesturing toward the bag, and he nodded.

“I came, I saw, I… got my ass cursed out. So it went about like I expected, popping up on my ex-wife with no notice.”

Shaking my head, I moved to the computer to start the quick checkout procedure. The payment and everything was handled automatically, electronically, so other than confirming that he’d turned in the room key and offering him a receipt, there wasn’t much for me to do.

“So… I’m assuming she’s talked to you about uh… about her… big decision…” Leon said, retrieving his bag from the counter. He was fishing, I could tell, trying to avoid saying too much in the event Eva hadn’t talked to me.
